World Cup Champion Megan Rapinoe is one of the successful female athletes to be featured on What Makes Us, a new documentary series of short films directed and produced by Rena Mundo Croshere and Nadine Mundo, more famously known as the Mundo Sisters. In a 13-minute documentary short titled "Pinoe," Megan Rapinoe talks about her world-famous pass in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup quarterfinals against Brazil as well as her decision to come out in 2012.
In the clip, Rapinoe shares that she began contemplating revealing her true identity right after the 2011 World Cup. "I feel like when you can really be comfortable with yourself and be true to yourself, then all these other cool things about you are able to shine," Rapinoe says. She received positive reactions when she came out to her family and to her teammates, something that surprised Rapinoe and grateful for, she says.
What Makes Us aims to tell the stories of successful female athletes and the obstacles they had to conquer to become world-class icons to their respective sports. The series hopes that it would inspire younger women to break boundaries through the personal portrayal of these athletes.
