Candace Cameron Bure and Raven-Symoné, both cohosts of The View, mixed it up in a recent episode over whether a bakery’s refusal to provide a cake for a same-sex wedding constitutes discrimination.
Bure, a straight and conservative Christian, argued that when the owners of Oregon’s Sweet Cakes by Melissa refused to provide a cake for two women’s wedding, they weren’t discriminating based on the women’s sexual orientation, but “they had a problem with the actual ceremony, because that, the ceremony, is what conflicted with their religious beliefs.”
Raven-Symoné, who’s in a relationship with former America's Next Top Model contestant and actress AzMarie Livingston but eschews labels, countered, “Sexual orientation also goes hand in hand with marriage in that situation.”
Bure said it’s “unconscionable” that the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries has imposed a fine of $135,000 on Sweet Cakes for discrimination — a fine the business owners plan to appeal.
She and Raven-Symoné also differed over whether the bakery’s action was comparable to racial discrimination. Watch below.
