Superstar Miley Cyrus has teamed up with transgender rocker and Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace, and rock legend Joan Jett for a moving performance of “Androgynous,” debuting exclusively with The Advocate.
The video is the latest from Cyrus’s series of “Backyard Sessions,” exclusive Facebook videos shot to encourage viewers to donate to the singer’s recently-launched anti-homelessness, pro-LGBT Happy Hippie Foundation.
Funds raised are used are used to create digital support groups for LGBT youth and their families. These groups remotely offer the proven services of in-person support groups and provide a personal, moderated, safe, and affirming experience along with legal and medical resources.
“For so many trans people, online is the first place trans people turn to find community and understand what it means to be trans,” Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, tells The Advocate. “With the Happy Hippie Foundation, Miley is taking this a step further to build community while also combating homelessness. With new federal guidelines protecting trans people's right to access homeless shelters, Miley is helping to lead in an area our country's LGBT young people need most.”
Every $15 donated to the foundation provides one LGBT youth with digital support groups for a year so that they can access critical resources, help, and community no matter where they live.
“I’m fighting for people I don’t know,” Cyrus recently told Out, “but it’s also a fight for people I do know, and people I’m close to and love.”
