Out Australian model and DJ Ruby Rose shows an honest transformation of breaking free from gender roles in her debut short film, “Break Free”. The film is a visual story that floats along with Butterfly Boucher’s song, “It Pulls Me Under.” Rose stares at the reflection in the mirror—make up, lashes, blonde hair, and a form-fitting dress. Though she is beautiful, you can sense that there is something wrong. The look is reminiscent of Rose’s early days of being a model.
Soon Rose taps a pair of scissors to her forehead, contemplating cutting the blonde locks. This is a scene that probably resonates with a lot of us because it signifies taking the plunge to being comfortable in our own bodies. But once Rose snips the first strands, it quickly escalates until the hair is cropped short, and Rose finally gleams into the mirror.
As the film goes on, more of Rose becomes exposed as she scrubs the make-up off her arms to reveal a sleeve of tattoos. She sheds the skin that isn’t hers and finally her body language begins to exude relief. The video comments on key issues: gender identity, and gender presentation. Back in April, a Facebook post by Rose shows a peak at how she feels as a woman that has contemplated transition in the past. It is clear in the video that Rose goes through these thoughts within “Break Free.”
Rose, who wrote and produced the film, also worked with her fashion designer fiancé, Phoebe Dahl, and director Philip Lopez. Watch the video below to see how gender is a spectrum best defined not by society’s standards, but by your own terms.
