Tennis superstar and pioneering out athlete Martina Navratilova married fiancée Julia Lemigova in New York on Dec.15, according to the BBC. The Couple, who’ve been dating since 2006, became engaged this September when Navratilova got down on her knee and proposed between matches during the U.S. Open.

"I'm 58 years old -- I got married for the first time," Navratilova told the BBC after the ceremony. “About time, right? Growing up as a gay woman you just don't ever think about that."

A radiant Lemigova, 42, said, regarding the proposal that aired on the Jumbotron back in September, "By proposing and marrying in such a public way, I think -- I hope – will give an inspiration to the families set up like ours, that they, too, can be married legally one day."

Navratilova, winner of 18 Grand Slam singles titles, ruled women’s tennis in the ‘70s and ‘80s following her 1975 defection from former Czechoslovakia. She came out publicly in 1981, and has been an advocate for LGBT equality ever since.

Here's another picture of the couple together -- just because.

Congratulations to the happy couple!
