Rocker and activist Melissa Etheridge has released her single "Uprising of Love" in conjunction with the social movement of the same name dedicated to supporting the Russian Freedom Fund, which makes direct contributions to LGBT Russian activists. All of the proceeds from sales of Etheridge’s song will go to the Russian Freedom Fund, according to a press release.
Etheridge debuted her new song in December at the Uprising of Love launch.
“At this unique moment in history, when we are seeing such rapid progress in the fight for equality in the West, we cannot be blinded to appalling crimes against humanity elsewhere,” reads a statement on Uprising of Love’s website. “Today in Russia, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people are facing harassment, arrest and violence under a set of horrific new laws. For their sake, we must come together and start an uprising of love.”
The organization was founded by Etheridge and her partner Linda Wallem, Dustin Lance Black, Bruce Cohen, and Greg Propper. And an impressive coalition of celebrities who have also pledged their support to the cause including Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, James Franco, Edward Norton, Jim Parsons, Julianne Moore, Chris Colfer, and Sean Hayes.
