The HBO series The Idolhas dropped a new teaser trailer and the queer cast alone has us hooked. To say it’s star-studded is an understatement.
The show, which was created by Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd) and Euphoria’s Sam Levinson, follows Lily-Rose Depp as a pop star named Jocelyn who finds herself drawn into a cult led by Tesfaye’s character, Tedros, who himself is a pop star turned self-help guru.
The Idol looks to be a vibe. And it boasts Levinson’s signature style, one that oozes sex, drugs, rock’n’roll — and, of course, so much queerness.
The new teaser focuses mostly on those who round out the cast alongside Tesfaye and Depp, and its a veritable who’s who of queer faves including Troye Sivan, Blackpink’s Jennie Ruby Jane, Dan Levy, Suzanna Son, TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, Hari Nef, and Nico Hiraga.
And that’s not all. Hank Azaria, Jane Adams, and Rachel Sennott also appear in the trailer. Although she doesn’t appear here, Anne Heche, who recently passed away following a car accident, was also previously announced as starring in the series.
Another star who doesn’t show up, but would make so much sense to appear in The Idol, is pop queen Britney Spears. You’re not alone in thinking that, because the “Toxic” singer is also rumored to be making an appearance in the series. In a since-removed Instagram post, Spears posted a video of herself alongside Tesfaye and Levinson that many speculated meant she would be among the show’s cast. Adding to that, Spears’ assistant shared a photo on IG that appears to show her on The Idol’s set with a camera and equipment in the background. So, while it’s not confirmed yet, there’s certainly plenty of reason to believe we’ll see Spears pop up on the show.
The Idol is set to premiere later this year on HBO Max. In the meantime, you can watch the trailer below and get obsessed.
