Michael Bruner was introduced on Big Brother 24 as a 28-year-old attorney from Rochester, Minn. From the very start, Bruner was perceived as a fan-favorite not only for having a lot of charisma and strategic mindset, but also for being a huge superfan of the show. He also spoke very openly about being gay and being engaged to his fiancé, Hayden.
Over the years, Big Brother has featured a few LGBTQ+ contestants who stood out in the series. Namely, Andy Herren became the first out gay man to win the show on BB15 and Kaycee Clark became the first out lesbian woman to win the show on BB20. Other queer fan-favorites who didn’t go on to win the competition include Vanessa Rousso (BB17), Tommy Bracco (BB21), and Christie Murphy (BB21). In turn, the show has also featured queer contestants who were considered controversial within the fanbase, such as Frankie Grande (BB16), Jozea Flores (BB18), and Derek Frazier (BB23).
Though there is still a lot of Big Brother to be played on season 24, Bruner has done very well for himself thus far. And yet, he has had a very interesting journey both inside and outside of the Big Brother house. Given his recent reign as Head of Household, it’s time to look back at Bruner’s journey on BB24 so far.

As soon as season 24 started, many viewers and former Big Brother players were quick to rally behind Bruner as a fan-favorite.
The “Queen of Big Brother” herself Janelle Pierzina tweeted out, “Here is my draft pick. I struggled with him or Taylor but ultimately had to pick him. His game knowledge is too big of a threat. My money is on Michael.” Moreover, BB19 winner Josh Martinez also wrote, “Always rooting for the super fans. God I hope Michael doesn’t overplay [too] soon.”
Bruner’s journey on BB24 could’ve been cut much, much shorter if he hadn’t been able to get himself out of trouble a few times. As of week six, he has already been nominated twice for eviction.
Bruner was first put up on the block by HOH Daniel Durston in week one, then again by HOH Matt Turner in week three. Both times, he won the Power of Veto competition and was able to save himself from eviction.
Alliances are very important on Big Brother, and Bruner made sure that he was a part of a strong group of people that could help him survive the first few weeks in the competition.
Starting in week three, Bruner became a part of the Leftovers alliance alongside Brittany Hoopes, Joseph Abdin, Kyle Capener, Matt Turner, Monte Taylor, and Taylor Hale. Specifically, Hoopes has been one of Bruner’s closest allies.
Bruner has been the ultimate competition beast of Big Brother 24. In just six weeks, Bruner has won four Power of Veto competitions and one Head of Household competition. Given how early it is in the season, Bruner could very well break the all-time competition records currently set for the American edition of Big Brother.
After Bruner won his first-ever Head of Household competition in week five, fans were looking forward to seeing him reign as the HOH of the show. However, Michael’s fiancé, Hayden, called out the network for editing out of the episode the letter he had sent Michael as part of his HOH win.
“Wow, very surprised by [Big Brother] not including my letter to Michael when every single other letter this season has been included…” Hayden wrote. “For Michael, I wish they had put it in the episode tonight.”
In a since-deleted tweet, Herren, who had previously won Big Brother 15, clapped back at a fan who compared him to Bruner. The fan wrote, “Hot take: Michael thinks he’s Janelle but he’s really Andy.”
Herren quote-retweeted the post with a response: “He’s playing nothing like me but it’s fun to compare us because he’s gay! Cool! We love some causal homophobia! Also I played one of the best games of all-time so this isn’t really an insult. That’s all!”
