LGBTQ+ representation is coming to Love Island!
Peacock has just announced the OG cast of Love Island USA season four, and it includes five girls who’ll be competing in the villa from day one.
One of those OG girls, Courtney Boerner, described herself as a 24-year-old Floridian who currently works as a stylist in L.A. Even more interesting, though, is that Boerner talked openly during her introduction to the press that she’s dated both men and women in the past.
Boerner’s “fun facts” included:
“Celeb crushes: Keanu Reeves, Michael B. Jordan, Will Smith and James Franco. Hates bad breath more than anything… keep it minty people! Has had 19 plastic surgeries. Could not live without her jewelry… or her vibrator! Loves a great personality and has dated both men and women.”
There has been a longstanding criticism of the Love Island franchise for not including more LGBTQ+ representation.
In 2021, producers behind the original UK series even said that casting LGBTQ+ contestants would present “logistical difficulties” to the show, as reported by The Guardian. Also last year, Love Island USA season three contestant Leslie Golden – who is also bisexual but was only introduced during the Casa Amor twist – threw shade at the producers for not including more queer people on the show as well (via Screen Rant).
The American show has now moved to Peacock, and it seems like the streamer is not scared of highlighting that one of its OG islanders happens to be bisexual. Though there have been former contestants who came out as queer while competing on Love Island or after they were eliminated, it is a great thing to see that Boerner’s queerness is already being noted from the very beginning.
Love Island USA season four premieres July 19 on Peacock.
