With Heartstopper already renewed for two additional seasons, fans are clamoring for any tidbits of information regarding what is to come — and a recent casting call is giving us a little clue.
The sweet Netflix series that has already meant so much to young queer kids in just one short season follows Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) as he falls in love with Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), and their day-to-day lives with friends at their school. It’s based on a graphic novel series of the same name, written by Alice Oseman.
One of fans’ favorite things about the series has been how closely it followed the original comics, both in story and in overall vibe. And it seems like the show may plan to keep doing just that, as a recent open casting call is bringing a familiar character to the upcoming season.
The show’s official Instagram announced a search for a plus size British South Asian actor who identifies as female or non-binary to play the role of Sahar Zahid. Sahar is described as “no nonsense, independent, a little cynical at times,” and in year 11 at Charlie and Nick’s school.
“Needless to say we would like to ensure performers from the LGBTQIA+ community feel inspired to apply along with allies to our community,” the post reads.
Sahar is part of the main friend group in the source material, but isn’t a major player compared to the others, so it isn’t yet clear what kind of role she’ll have in the show.
Still, fans are already hyped to see what comes of this new inclusion.
Season two of Heartstopper will likely start filming in September, with a release date expected some time in 2023.
