Paper Girls is based on the comic series of the same name by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Cliff Chiang. Set in the 1980s, it takes the familiar story of a group of young friends stumbling into out of this world adventures — the exact kind of thing millennials and Gen X grew up watching — makes all the protagonists young girls instead of boys, and wraps it all up with an exciting sci-fi time travel twist.

The comic series gained a cult following, particularly among LGBTQ+ fans as the characters and story progressed, and was ultimately picked up by Amazon Studios and Legendary Television for development by Stephany Folsom, with Halt and Catch Fire co-creator Christopher C. Rogers showrunning the first season.
“As fans of the comic already know, this story seamlessly interweaves deeply personal character drama with the kind of high adventure and action that is truly rare on the small screen,” Rogers said. “That said, this show is for everyone (even those who’ve never picked up a comic book!) who has ever wondered what it would be like to meet themselves at a different stage of life.”
The series features a young cast of breakout stars, including Camryn Jones as Tiffany, Riley Lai Nelet as Erin, Sofia Rosinksy as Mac, and Fina Strazza as KJ.
Ali Wong has also been announced as the adult version of Erin the girls meet when they get booted into the future.
“I am so excited for viewers to discover the incredible young leads of Paper Girls, my co-stars Riley Lai Nelet, Camryn Jones, Sofia Rosinsky, and Fina Strazza. Riley and I get to play ‘Erin’ in different decades, and our collaborations in crafting this character together could not have been more fun,” Wong said.
Vaughn also praised the cast as feeling “ripped from the pages of our comic,” and promised “huge surprises” in the first season even for fans familiar with the original story.
The eight episode first season of Paper Girls is slated to drop on Prime Video July 29.
