With Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) presumed to play a prominent part in the upcoming third season of The Boys, fans have been wondering what moments from the comics will make the leap from page to screen. Although we’ll have to wait for the actual episodes for most details, showrunner Eric Kripke is already dishing on one major Soldier Boy scene that didn’t make the cut.
The Herogasm storyline of the comics follows the characters to a sort of superhero convention that’s ultimately just a place for Vought’s most powerful to screw around. There’s a sequence in it that involves Homelander (played in the show by Antony Starr) convincing Soldier Boy that if he sleeps with him, Homelander just might let him into The Seven.
The TV series’ version of Soldier Boy is already shaping up to be a different type of character, though, and Kripke says playing out that scene in the show just wouldn’t have worked.
“I love that scene and it’s hilarious, but for a dozen reasons, all of which will be revealed when you see the season, it ultimately just didn’t track,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “We talked about it. It conflicted with a lot of the other things we were trying to build with Soldier Boy. So, unfortunately, that one had to go.”
However, both Kripke and the cast have promised their version of Herogasm will still be a wild ride — which tracks with the content of the show so far.
“I think the joy of ‘Herogasm’ is figuring out what exactly that means, watching it for yourself, seeing how it unfolds,” said Jack Quaid, who plays Hughie in the series. “That goes into places where you wouldn’t necessarily expect it to go.”
Meanwhile, Ackles has talked about the crew looking like they had been traumatized, and Kripke himself called the dailies both “hard to describe” and “insane.”
There’s no word yet on if there will be any sort of sexual interactions between Homelander and Soldier Boy in lieu of the comic’s manipulation scene, but I wouldn't hold your breath.
