Ra’Jah O’Hara Spent Only $600 on Her Drag Race: All Stars 6 Looks
Talk about a comeback!
Another year of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars has come to a close, crowning Kylie Sonique Love as the winner of the herstory-making sixth season. Even though it's all over, the gags are still rolling in.
In a new interview with NewNowNext, runner-up Ra'Jah O'Hara reveals she spent only $600 on her outfits, a shocking dollar amount considering the small fortunes we usually hear these queens spend to look incredible on that runaway.
"I made everything, and then I had be resourceful," said O'Hara. "I had to be very resourceful first off because we were in the middle of a pandemic working with limited time and resources, but also because I didn’t actually have the connections. A lot of girls leave Drag Race and they are so beloved by the world that the world opens up and unveils themselves to these queens so that they have a lot more opportunities to be seen and recognized by designers. But me leaving Season 11 as the villain, I didn’t have that opportunity. All I got to see was my inbox flooded with snake emojis and death threats."
Many queens – Black and brown ones especially – receive a disproportionate amount of hate from viewers. Despite all the venom from "fans," O'Hara took the challenge of All Stars head-on. "The fact that I absolutely sew, that I know how to sew and that I’m comfortable sewing as well. So I knew that I had to use what I had and all I had at the time was $600. Because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to take out a $20,000 loan like some people do. I feel like if I can’t make it with what I got, it ain’t for me. And luckily I was able to make everything that you saw. Except for the blue tulle gown. My sister Ariel O’Hara — I have to give her flowers — she did come through. She made the blue tulle dress for me that I wore for my thrills, but everything else on the runway I made myself, specifically for the competition."
Talk about charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent!
So you can get an idea of how insanely low that number is, VICE reported earlier this year that the average amount a Drag Race contestant spends on outfits for the show is between "$4,000 on the low end to upwards of $20,000 on the higher end."
Season 8 winner Bob the Drag Queen said she spent $3,000 on her looks that season, plus $3k more on her two finale looks, but “if I went back on Drag Race now, I’d probably be spending $20–40,000."
O'Hara spent a fraction of that for her stunning run on the show, and we couldn't be prouder!
