Mads Mikkelsen Almost Kissed Hugh Dancy on the 'Hannibal' Finale

"Me and Hugh were like, 'Why not?'"

Contain your inner fangirl, Hannibal fans. We now have confirmation that the kiss that never happened, almost happened.

In a new interview with Vulture, actor Mads Mikkelsen revealed that he almost planted one on his costar Hugh Dancy during Hannibal's Season 3 finale.

As diehard fans know, the homoerotic tension had been building between their two characters, Will Graham (Dancy) and Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mikkelsen), the entire series. It's hard to pinpoint when exactly their obsession with each other evolved into something more, but the series certainly tried to make it clear that their relationship was more than just platonic with that explosive ending.

And it seems Mikkelsen and Dancy felt that homoerotic energy as well! (It wasn't just in our head, Tumblr girls!)

"We actually did a couple of takes of the very last scene where we were looking at each other, and it was a little too obvious — it was almost a kiss," said the actor. "Me and Hugh were like, 'Why not? We have a couple of takes. Let’s do one. It might be cool.'"

Creator Bryan Fuller thought it might've jumped the shark. "We never went for the kiss," Mikkelsen continued. "Bryan loved it, but he was like, 'Too much, guys. It’s too obvious.' And he was absolutely right."

Perhaps the internet chatter had more of an effect on the actors than we knew. "I think we were just stuck on that," Mikkelsen said about the idea of a kiss. "And a lot of the Fannibals wanted it as well. It’s been a subject of homoerotic fan art. And for good reason, because they are so united as twins in many ways. But we never wanted it to be a physical thing. It was something much bigger than that."

Could you imagine the repercussions that kiss would've had on Tumblr circa 2015? We shiver at the thought.
