Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang proved just how right we were to stan him when, over the weekend, he used his platform to urge people to taken action against the nation's ongoing epidemic of anti-Asian hate crimes.
Using his trademark humor and wit, the comedian (who made history in 2019 after becoming SNL's first gay, Asian cast member) took to the long-running sketch comedy series's popular Weekend Update segment to openly and honestly talk about the wave of hate and violence many members of the Asian American & Pacific Islander community all over the country have been facing since the start of the pandemic.
"What can I say to help how insanely bad things are?" he asked the audience and viewers. "If someone’s personality will punch an Asian grandma, it’s not a dialogue. I have an Asian grandma, you want to punch her? There ain’t no common ground, mama."
Urging people to do more than just the bare minimum and actually help take action against AAPI hate, he (perfectly & succinctly) continued:
"Why are you telling me that you tipped your manicurist well? Let me know when you get on your knees and scrub her feet while she looks at your phone. Do more. I’m just a comedian. I don’t have the answers, but I’m not just looking for them online. I'm looking around me."
Now THAT'S how you use your platform for good!
