After it's controversial canceling on Netflix last year, beloved LGBTQ+ inclusive sitcom One Day at a Time is back—and unafraid to take digs at its former streaming platform.
In the opening minutes of the Season 4 premiere on Pop TV, the family sits in the living room around the television. Penelope walks in and asks, "Did you decide what we're watching for movie night?"
Alex cheekily responds, "No, it's like there's nothing good on Netflix anymore..."
Gloria Calderón Kellett, the series' co-creator, told Entertainment Weekly that the joke was all in good fun.
"It has been no secret that we really do love them and we love each other. On both sides, there's been really lovely things said. We've said lovely things to them and they've said lovely things to us," she explained.
"We're very grateful for the three seasons, but now we can kind of make fun of it. Hey, they did break up with us. So we get to have a little bit of fun with that. I think that's allowed all in good fun."
Ray Romano also made a guest appearance in the first episode!
"We've been wanting to get Ray, obviously, and it just needed to be the right thing," said Calderón Kellett. "At the beginning of this season, we had a bunch of obviously Latino led issues we wanted to tackle. One of our writers said, ‘Hey we can use the census?’ which is something that's very important for communities of color, specifically Latinos because we are typically very underrepresented due to fear. This is a great way to talk about something that we should be participating in and at the same time, it's a great reintroduction for those who have not seen the first three seasons on Netflix, to get acquainted with who this family is and then get on board quickly to who they are, what their relationships are, and then we can start the show."
One Day at a Time premieres Tuesday, March 24 on Pop TV.
