Farewell, Ruby Red!

RuPaul may be spreading his wings, but AJ and the Queen season 2 won’t be taking flight.

The Netflix series ran for a solid 10 episodes its first (and only) season, telling the story of drag queen Ruby Red (RuPaul) who travels across the country with a ten-year-old orphan, AJ (Izzy G). The comedy show was created by RuPaul and Michael Patrick King, and premiered in January to mixed reviews, though it unquestionably provided some much needed drag representation in the world of scripted TV.

It’s been nearly impossible to determine what actually leads Netflix to decide to renew or cancel a show, making it particularly difficult to predict when the end is nigh, but RuPaul himself announced the cancelation on Twitter earlier this week.

“End of the road for ‘AJ and The Queen,’” he wrote. “@Netflix has decided to not extend our road trip across America. Thank you for all the love & support. We’re so very proud of the work.”

It’s a tough blow for Ru, who has been trying to branch out from the highly popular RuPaul’s Drag Race into other ventures. Last year, he did a three-week trial run hosting a daytime talk show, but it was casually revealed in January of this year that it would not be moving forward.

Of course, he certainly still has his hands full. Drag Race season 12 is currently airing, with All Stars 5 slated to make the jump to Showtime later this year. The reality series launched a UK spin-off last year and a Canadian Drag Race is coming soon. But even outside of Drag Race, we have no doubt we’ll be seeing more fascinating projects from Mama Ru sooner rather than later. It’s only too bad more AJ and the Queen won’t be among them.
