Hey, remember that time a reality show about buying a house had better representation than most TV shows and all mainstream movies?
Yeeeep. That’s where we’re at.
House Hunters threw appealing to the conservatives out the window this week when it aired an episode featuring a throuple looking for a house together. (“It’s a relationship that’s three people, not just two,” explains one of the polyamorous group, Lori.)
Texans Brian and Lori have been married for 18 years, and say they fell in love with Gelli after meeting her in a bar.
“I understood from day one, even when we were dating, that Lori was bisexual,” said Brian. “And so we evolved to a point where we were comfortable having another woman in our lives.”
Gelli said that it wasn’t her intention to join up with another couple, but the whole thing felt like a natural evolution between the three, and thus the throuple came to be.
While Brian and Lori are the ones legally married with two kids, all three of them have exchanged vows and are now raising the kids together. Hence, their need to find a new house to accommodate their unique family.
After the episode aired, the internet was kind of freaking out about such an unprecedented example of real life polyamory being casually presented in an episode of a “regular” show.
While this is the first time they’ve featured a poly relationship on the show, House Hunters has actually had a long history of being inclusive. Many episodes of the show have featured queer couples in all stages of their relationships, and at times, the “On Demand” section for HGTV has even highlighted those episodes for the LGBTQ community to better find house hunting representation that reflects their lives.
And yeah, of course the conservatives are mad, but clearly HGTV isn’t listening to them. Now if only all the big movie studios would take a page from their playbook!
