Billy Porter's Coming to Sesame Street and Guess Who's Mad About It?
Hint: it's not the kids.
Billy Porter has already conquered Broadway, and now he’s taking his talents to a new iconic street — Sesame Street.
The long-running permanently popular children’s show welcomed Porter to the set and shared photos from the episode taping on Twitter this week.
“An iconic day with an iconic person,” the official account wrote. “Thanks for visiting Sesame Street, @thebillyporter!”
“An iconic day with an iconic person ♥️ Thanks for visiting Sesame Street, @theebillyporter! #Season51”— Sesame Street (@Sesame Street) 1580391738
It’s typically a celebrity no-no to reuse outfits, but Porter’s highly recognizable tuxedo gown is on full display in these photos. While Porter is iconic for so many reasons, the choice of an outfit that doesn’t just happen to blur gender lines, but that actively garnered him so much press at last year’s Academy Awards, makes us wonder if his episode will specifically low-key address gender norms and embracing your true self for kids.
Naturally, the conservatives had the same idea, but for them, breaking outside of societal norms is a fear, not a freedom.
“@sesamestreet @theebillyporter @elmo This absolutely shameful and this should be off limits to children!!! Never ever will I allow my children to watch again!!!”— Sesame Street (@Sesame Street) 1580391738
“@sesamestreet @theebillyporter @elmo Please stop trying to groom our children. This is totally inappropriate.

Stop taking your kids to Dr*g Q***n story hour and take them to Holy Hour instead.”— Sesame Street (@Sesame Street) 1580391738
It’s devastating that some parents are so trapped by antiquated ideas as to what’s “normal” that they wouldn’t let their children either learn about people who are different from them or learn to accept themselves, but Porter is still coming to Sesame Street. An iconic children’s show invited a kind and influential man, breaking boundaries and spreading the gospel of loving yourself just the way you are, to be part of a show that has long championed diversity and inclusivity.
And just as most of us learned from Sesame Street during our formative years, hopefully, some kids out there will learn something from Billy Porter that helps them as they’re growing up.
