Even if you don’t watch American Idol, you may have been keeping up with one of the fan favorite stories from this season.

Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon first gained attention during his audition when he blew the judges away with an original song, “Almost Heaven.”

In that room, Harmon shared his story of growing up as a pastor’s son and coming out as gay, and how his parents didn’t accept that part of him.

“There are certain parts of me that do belong, and there are parts that don’t belong,” he said at the time, of growing up as a pastor’s kid.

But now, in the latest round of performances, Harmon had the opportunity to actually perform in front of his parents for the first time on the show.

His cover of Freddie Mercury’s “Who Wants to Live Forever” blew the judges away, and wowed his parents as well.

“It was so beautiful seeing you perform in front of your parents for the first time,” Katy Perry told him. “And it’s so wonderful to see your journey, to hear about it, and to see your parents really come out here and support you and accept you and know it’s a come as you are situation.”

When Idol host Ryan Seacrest asked Harmon’s parents what they thought, his father called it “another great performance.”

“I’m not very objective, but I think he’s the best one here,” he said.

While the show seems to be trying to craft a narrative of a son whose religious parents rejected him for his sexuality but ultimately come around over the course of American Idol, Harmon previously spoke with Out and explained the situation is more nuanced than that.

“In reality, [my parents are] just trying to integrate this experience and they’re processing it their own way,” he said.
