UK Fans Accuse Network of Censoring Schitt's Creek LGBTQ Content
Schitt’s Creek fans aren’t too happy after discovering a channel in the UK might be censoring some of the LGBTQ content.
The beloved Canadian show may be known for its inclusion of heartwarming LGBTQ storylines, but people watching the show for the first time in the UK may have a slightly different viewing experience.
Fans began tweeting the network, 4Music, as well as Schitt’s Creek creator Dan Levy over the weekend, claiming that 4Music seemed to be editing out random parts of scenes between Levy’s character, David, and his male love interests.
“4Music showed Schitt’s Creek with cut dialogue between David and Patrick,” user AshthenRuby tweeted. “‘…to sleep with me or whatever’ is just missing. But their kiss is there. And [episode’s] earlier talk of Moira sleeping with Roland remains. And Moira still says ‘fuck,’ so some curious censoring.”
“Wondering about the decision to edit certain Schitt’s Creek scenes on @4Music ? Just noticed a scene between David & Patrick and another between David & Jake have been trimmed down.”— Wes (@Wes) 1577015550
Levy tweeted the network directly when word of the discrepancy reached him.
“Is this true, @4Music? Censoring kissing and intimate dialogue?” he wrote. He then shared a scene reportedly taken from the channel in which a kiss between David and Jake had been removed.
“Footage of the Jake/David kiss having been edited out. Aside from this censorship being highly disturbing and dangerous, it was a big laugh in the scene! This is very disheartening. @4Music”— dan levy (@dan levy) 1577045634
Fans immediately reacted, pointing out how dangerous it is for a network to censor content in this way, suggesting that behaviors within LGBTQ relationships are intrinsically "mature content" compared to the exact same type of behavior between heterosexual couples.
“@danjlevy @4Music It’s disturbing that networks/ tv channels feel the need to cut any sort of intimacy between LGBTQ+ characters. Normalizing this type of hatred is NOT okay. Also David and Patrick are the cutest couple of the decade so censoring there dialogues/ kissing is an extreme disservice”— dan levy (@dan levy) 1577040545
“@danjlevy @4Music Where's my "release the gays" pitchfork, I'm marching over there!!”— dan levy (@dan levy) 1577045634
“@danjlevy @4Music”— dan levy (@dan levy) 1577040545
“Yikes. This is some bullshit from @4Music.”— Emma Fraser (@Emma Fraser) 1577046224
“@danjlevy @4Music sex is natural between some couples,,, “to sleep with me or whatever” is the least sexual thing possible to say”— dan levy (@dan levy) 1577040545
“@danjlevy Hell yeah. Not to mention censoring parts of the performance of the decade. That’s altering cultural history in multiple bad wrong ways.”— dan levy (@dan levy) 1577040545
“Not to pop off but the fact that television networks and services like hallmark & 4music are actively making decisions to censor LGBT+ couples is inexcusable and extremely upsetting. Changing the decisions they made after facing backlash simply is not enough. It need to end.”— Carmela Montanero (@Carmela Montanero) 1577045774
4Music has yet to respond to the accusations.
