Johnny Weir Joins Netflix Figure Skating Drama Spinning Out
This upcoming series just got a lot more fabulous.
It looks like figure skating isn't done having its big gay moment!
Fresh off the 2018 Winter Olympics, the year of Adam Rippon, and the rebirth of Tonya Harding, Netflix is launching an edgy drama series about cutthroat competition on the ice—and they just brought in OG ice queen Johnny Weir as one of the villains.
The two-time Olympian has been cast in the upcoming series Spinning Out, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which means our expectations for the one-liners and the costumes just went WAY up.

The show focuses on Kat (The Maze Runner star Kaya Scodelario), whose rising career as a singles figure skater is derailed following a serious injury. She decides to team up with "bad-boy partner" Justin (Arrow star Evan Roderick) to compete in pairs skating, while "risking exposure of a secret that could unravel her entire life."
Weir will play opposite Shadowhunters star Kaitlyn Leeb as Gabe, a pairs skater who "seems like an easygoing guy, but underneath is a cutthroat competitor who will stop at nothing to beat Kat and Justin."
So it's basically going to be The Cutting Edge meets Gossip Girl. I am...way too into that.
The lead role initially went to PRIDE favorite Emma Roberts of American Horror Story and Scream Queens fame, but she left the series in late October after booking another job.

While Weir wasn't technically out during his competitive skating career, his flamboyant costumes and hairstyles were a pretty big clue. Now he and fellow fierce skater Tara Lipinski are an essential part of skating commentary at the Olympics, and the most entertaining part of any red carpet they end up on.
Needless to say, we've got one of our binge-watches for 2019 all picked out.
Spinning Out was created by former competitive skater Samantha Stratton, who will serve as co-showrunner with 90210's Lara Olsen.
