The 25 Most Important LGBTQ Characters on TV
Representation is powerful. Our media reflects what society deems valuable, beautiful, and worthy of love. If people who look and sound and feel like you are left out of that narrative, it sends a subliminal message of unimportance and alienation.
When was the first time you saw yourself reflected on TV? Someone who looked like you, who's family acted like yours, who experienced the same things you have? Jodie Dallas, the first openly gay character on television, premiered in 1977, but I never saw myself until 2015 on FOX's Empire, when a five-year-old Jamal Lyon walked into his living room wearing his mother's heels. We all have wildly different experiences, and having our identities explored on screen can change how you see yourself and how the world sees you.
Editors at PRIDE, Out Magazine, and The Advocate voted on and ranked our 25 most important and influential LGBTQ characters in TV history. Did yours make the list?
