So Many LGBT Shows Got Cancelled This Year

Sense8 is the latest LGBT show cancelled this season.

1. Doubt

Despite its heavy promotion, CBS's legal drama, Doubt, starring Laverne Cox and Katherine Heigl, was cancelled only two episodes into its run after a dismal number of viewers and disappointing reviews. 13 episodes were filmed for the first season, and it's unclear if CBS will air the remaining eleven episodes.

2. The Real O'Neals

Just hitting its stride, ABC's family sitcom with a gay twist was cancelled after two seasons. Surprisingly charming, The Real O'Neals followed Kenny (Noah Galvin), a quirky gay teen growing up in a dysfunctional Catholic family. Despite growing a rabid fanbase, the show was ABC's least-watched comedy series, averaging 3.1 viewers a week and was cut from the network's lineup.

3. The Get Down

The first Netflix original series to be canned after one season, The Get Down's cancellation has been met with outrage. Created by Baz Luhrmann (The Great GatsbyMoulin Rouge), the flamboyant and musically-tinged show explored the hip-hop scene in the 1970s and a queer relationship between Jaden Smith's character and another boy. Netflix is usually slow to cancel its original shows (even if they don't perform as well as hoped) but high costs and conflicts with Luhrmann's schedule led to the streaming service's decision to end the series prematurely.

4. Sense8

The beloved queer Netflix original series has official been ditched. After cancellation rumors started swirling earlier this week, Brian J. Smith, who plays Will on the series, ominously tweeted "This might be a good time to start making some noise." Fans certainly did, and #RenewSense8 began trending instantly to push to get Netflix to give the green light on Season 3, but it looks like it's all been for nought. Cindy Holland, VP Netflix original content, gave an official statement on Sense8's cancellation to TV Show Patrol earlier today:

After 23 episodes, 16 cities and 13 countries, the story of the Sense8 cluster is coming to an end. It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable. Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world. We thank Lana, Lilly, Joe and Grant for their vision, and the entire cast and crew for their craftsmanship and commitment.

Excuse me, I'm in mourning and need a minute.
