In the latest episode of the hit CW show, The Big Man Upstairs reveals himself to be bi.
The CW's Supernatural is a show that's always had a bit of an issue with queer representation. In its 11 years of being on air, the longest running show on the network has only given viewers just a handful of LGBT side characters, and even less recurring LGBT characters. Hell, the most beloved queer character, Charlie (played by the lovely Felicia Day), was unexpectedly killed off last season in a decision that effectively broke the hearts of the collective fandom.
Recently, however, fans have started to notice how the show seems to be changing. This season alone has featured several queer characters from police officer Jenna, to the more recent addition of hunter husbands Jessy and Cesar.
There's definitely something shifting, and longtime fans (such as myself) have been feeling it for months. But nothing could have prepared us for the choice they made in last week's episode, "Don't Call Me Shurley." I'll spare the complicated details, because there's a lot of back story here (11 seasons, remember?), but the short version is this: God (Chuck, played by Rob Benedict) returned. That's right. God himself. The Big Guy Upstairs.
While it was a major moment in general, it became even more momentous when God began to talk about what he'd been up to the past few years:
"I traveled a lot, you know. And uh, I dated! Yeah, I had some girlfriends. Had a few boyfriends."
Right about there is where fans like myself gasped, because this show had dared to make God himself what appears to be bisexual, or pansexual, or fluid, etc. They had decided to make arguably the biggest being on the show bisexual.
Now, because of it, media analyzers who go around talking nonstop about LGBT representation on TV (again, I'm including myself in this) will get to add just one word to the list of bisexual and queer characters: God.
It was a bold move, and a very welcome one at that. I can only hope that the show continues to move in a more inclusive direction, especially now that they've clearly shown that putting queer characters at the forefront is not a problem. I mean, come on. It's GOD. Can't get much bigger than that!
