Earlier this month, history was made when Danica Roem became the first openly transgender person in US history elected to Virginia's state legislature. She unseated incumbent Republican Bob Marshall (one of the the state’s longest-serving and most socially conservative lawmakers), the man who sponsored a bill that attempted to restrict which bathrooms she could use.
Well, last night, pop star and longtime LGBT ally Demi Lovato took Danica as her guest to the annual American Music Awards in Los Angeles—and they both looked like they had a blast!
"I think what Danica has done is just completely inspirational, and she’s a trailblazer," Lovato said during an AMA interview. "To be a state legislator as a trans woman is groundbreaking and incredible, I have so much respect for her and I wanted to come with her."
Danica then spoke about the inclusive grounds on which she ran her campaign.
"My campaign, I talked a lot about the idea of making Virginia a more inclusive commonwealth," she said. "So no matter what you look like, where you come from, how you worship, or who you love, you are welcomed, celebrated, and respected in Virginia because of who you are, not despite."
