With the Supreme Court poised to rule in favor of marriage equality this summer, I decided to seek out THE spot for a gay wedding.
What I love most about gay weddings is that they are relatively new and therefore unbound by the age-old traditions that define heterosexual weddings. As such, I plan to marry somewhere a bit unconventional as opposed to the standard over-priced banquet hall pumping out hetero newlyweds like some sort of factory.
About an hour north of NYC sits the Storm King Art Center, a spectacular 500-acre open-air sculpture park and one of my favorite summer destinations. Famous artists from around the globe install massive pieces of modern art that rise out of the rolling Hudson Valley landscape that, true to the center’s name, create a backdrop worthy of a wedding for kings.
Becoming a member earns you the right to host an event on the grounds and although membership isn’t cheap, it’s less then traditional wedding venue rentals. They offer equipped facilities at the main museum but by far the most stunning locale is in the South Fields with sweeping mountain views behind the large-scale sculptures. One caveat, you’ll need to rent a generator to power your shindig in the fields, but hey, nobody said unconventional was easy.
Don’t have your king just yet? Grab a date and take a day trip this summer. You can rent a bike for $10 bucks and cruise the massive park at your leisure. It’s a Saturday afternoon well spent – you’ll get some culture and some exercise. Additional information available at www.stormking.org.
