An adaption of the Oscar-winning film Brokeback Mountain is heading to the West End stage!

Described as a play with music, the world premiere stage adaptation of the text will premiere at the Sohoplace Theatre in the West End and will star Oscar-nominated actor Lucas Hedges as Ennis Del Mar and BAFTA-nominated actor Mike Faist as Jack Twist.

The story was penned by Ashley Robinson and will be more true to the 1997 Annie Proulx story rather than Ang Lee's 2005 film. “Brokeback Mountain has been recreated in several different forms, each with its own distinctive moods and impact," said the writer. "Ashley’s script is fresh and deeply moving, opening sight lines not visible in the original nor successive treatments.”

Robinson added, “I’m honored to be entrusted by Annie Proulx to bring new life in new form to her timeless and universal story. A story that means so much to so many, and will surely mean as much to a whole new generation.”

The show will feature songs by Dan Gillespie Sells but it is not a musical! It will run at the Sohoplace Theatre in the West End for 12 weeks from May 10th to August 12th, 2023.

What's the famous line from Brokeback Mountain?

There are a few famous quotes from the film, but our favorite is when Jack tells Ennis, "I wish I knew how to quit you."

Did they kiss in Brokeback Mountain?

Yes, Jack and Ennis do kiss in the film.

Why was Jack killed in Brokeback Mountain?

Jack's wife, Lureen (played by Anne Hathaway), tells Ennis on the phone that Jack was changing a tire when it exploded and killed him. While they're speaking, we see a vision of Jack getting beat up by some men, implying that he was hate crimed. It's unclear if that was what really happened and Ennis was reading in between the lines, or if he just imagined the scenario.
