Tony Award winner Ben Platt is making his Broadway return in the Main Stem revival of the 1998 musical Parade.
The Dear Evan Hansen star is all set to lead the musical opposite Micaela Diamond, who rose to fame with her role as Babe in The Cher Show.
Platt celebrated the news on social media. "I am honored beyond words to finally return to Broadway in this beloved show. It’s a privilege to tell Leo’s story at this very moment," the 29-year-old wrote on social media.
According to People, "the musical dramatizes the true story Leo Frank, a Jewish factory superintendent in Atlanta, Georgia, who was convicted of the 1913 rape and murder of Mary Phagan, his 13-year-old employee. His death sentence was commuted to life in prison two years later by Georgia Governor John M. Slaton. This came after a review of the trial exposed discrepancies in testimonies that appeared to uphold his insistence on his innocence."
This musical is based on a true story. In 1915, Frank was kidnapped from prison by an unlawful mob that lynched him. "His trial, conviction and death attracted national attention to the antisemitism emerging in the south, which led to the birth of the Anti-Defamation League and the revival of the then-defunct Ku Klux Klan."
Despite the dark themes, the one song shared by Platt is surprisingly optimistic. He and Diamond have shared their stirring performance of "This Is Not Over Yet" on social media. "For Leo & Lucille," Platt wrote.
More cast roles will be announced at a later date. Performances of Parade will begin on February 21 at Broadway's Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre and is scheduled to officially open on March 16. Tickets are on sale now.
