For the first time in its history, the Disney Channel featured a same-sex couple on the latest episode of its Good Luck Charlie.
In the episode the moms are the parents of a friend of the titular preschooler, Charlie Duncan. When Charlie’s friend Taylor arrives, the Duncan family learns that the family is headed by two moms, which isn't a problem, until one parent is stuck listening to Bob Duncan's boring stories, while the other mom gets to chat with lively fellow mom Amy Duncan, according to TV Guide. The whole two moms thing is dealt with as a non-starter by the characters on the show.
Disney Channel has been lacking in its LGBT representation, though it's owned by the same parent company as ABC, ABC Family, and SoapNet, each of which are rife with gay and lesbian storylines from Grey’s Anatomy to The Fosters.
Last summer when the announcement was made that Disney would get its first same-sex pairing the House of Mouse issued a statement acknowledging that it would take the historic step seriously.
"This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors," a Disney Channel spokesperson said in a statement at the time. "Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness."
While the appearance of Taylor’s two moms on Good Luck Charlie is indeed a benchmark, the Disney Channel first featured a family headed by lesbian moms last year in its unscripted social outreach campaign, "Make Your Mark," which featured a teen with two moms. GLAAD reportedly called that a "big step forward" for the network.
