The transgender community is celebrating a small victory today after the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation made the announcement that they have agreed to allow transgender individuals to identify themselves more accurately on forms supplied by the state agency.

The Oprah Winfrey Network will devote Sunday, November 27, to an eye-opening look at two brave transgender individuals sharing the story with the world through documentary.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison LGBT Campus Center is fed up with the name-calling, the violence, the suicides, the hate. They filmed this video on Bascom Hill at UW Madison to show the impact of bullying on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals. 

Despite a slumping economy, Detroit automakers find ways to take care of their LGBT employees. Affirmations, which was founded in 1989 on the philosophy that "gay is good, you are not alone," strives to create an atmosphere of safety and acceptance for all people.  Their focus is on helping lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals find and develop community where they value and respect themselves and others.

Some 300 people gathered in Maryland on Monday evening for a vigil in response to the brutal beating of Chrissy Lee Polis captured on video at a McDonald’s last week. Reports from the scene in Rosedale in Baltimore County indicate that the crowd of activists and politicians expressed an upbeat and unified mood in the face of continuing violence against transgender individuals. The video of the beating filmed by a McDonald’s employee, who has since been fired, went viral on Youtube and, in the words of delegate Joseline Pena-Melnyk to her legislative colleagues, brought “shame” to the state. Teonna Monae Brown faces first and second-degree assault charges. The identity of her younger accomplice, who was charged as a juvenile, has not been released. Prosecutors are looking into the possibility of hate-crime charges.

It’s not easy for any person of African descent to be LGBTQ in our black communities, but our transgender brothers and sisters might feel the most discrimination. The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), in collaboration with the National Gay and Lesbian task Force and the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) released a groundbreaking study in September called "Injustice at Every Turn: A Look at Black Respondents in the National Transgender Discrimination Survey."
