Lesbian Illinois State Rep. Deb Mell (D-Chicago) announced on the state house floor Wednesday that she plans to marry her girlfriend. In the hopes that her announcement will lead to new legislation allowing gays and lesbians to marry in Illinois, Mell will wed her girlfriend of six years, Christin Baker. Gay Illinoisans rejoiced Monday afternoon as Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation establishing civil unions, giving same-sex couples most of the state-level rights and responsibilities of marriage.
