Mississippi School Owes Constance McMillen $81k

The Mississippi school district that canceled a high school prom because a lesbian student wanted to bring her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo was ordered to pay $81,000 in legal fees to the student, Constance McMillen. U.S. District Judge Glen H. Davidson signed the order on Monday, ordering the Itawamba County School District pay the fees to McMillen.

Arkansas Supreme Court Strikes Down Ban on Lesbians and Gays Adopting

The Arkansas supreme court ruled Thursday that a 2008 ballot initiative that barred gay and lesbian couples from adopting children was unconstitutional. "Act 1 directly and substantially burdens the privacy rights of 'opposite-sex and same-sex individuals' who engage in private, consensual sexual conduct in the bedroom by foreclosing their eligibility to foster or adopt children," Associate Justice Robert L. Brown wrote.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that members of the Westboro Baptist Church, infamous for their incendiary antigay demonstrations, are protected under the First Amendment in protesting military funerals.
