The season premiere of Top Chef: Las Vegas may just go down as one of the best season openers of the show yet. Not only are the 17 chefs (3 of them are gay or lesbian, including out lesbian Preeti Mistry, who needs remedial clam-shucking lessons) battling it out on Top Chef this season more experienced and competitive than ever, the show has also added in a few new twists to up the stakes.

Top Chef: Las Vegas started off the season with three gay or lesbian chefs in the kitchen and we had high hopes one of them would take home a win. Sadly, this year's rainbow team failed repeatedly to wow the judges and found themselves packing up their knives one by one. There wasn't a promising Jamie Lauren among them. 

To preface this review, I believe it is necessary for me to say that I was sold on this show from the moment I saw Piper Perabo was headlining. That said, I may be a bit biased in that I could watch her washing dishes for an hour and I’d be happy. In all seriousness, however, USA’s newest show "Covert Affairs" comes through as a breezy but energized spy thriller that is essentially “Alias Light.”

'Why doesn’t she just come out of the closet? I mean everybody already knows that she’s gay. Right, I mean give me a break!' My very straight friend, with her very hetero privilege...'Wanda Sykes came out didn't she?'

Sure, we could review the standard lesbian-themed movies hitting various LGBT film fests around the country this summer -- and we will -- but with so few films that pointedly appeal to women in the world, it's time to find ways to reclaim Hollywood as our own. And while Jake Gyllenhaal appeals to even gay ladies, it's Gemma Arterton that makes this blockbuster worth the price of admission.

Top Chef: Las Vegas wrapped up at last Wednesday night, leaving a rather bad taste in this viewer's mouth over the finale. Not only was the end result far too predictable, but the entire last episode felt like slowly drowning in quicksand.
