A mystery as old as time itself.
The sun is nearly setting on another half a season of the guilty little pleasure of choice among teens, adults, lesbians and a growing contingent of trendy gay boys, and wow, the writers are pulling out all the stops for our little lesbian of Rosewood, Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell).
We'll be shipping Eddie Brock and Venom 'til the end of time.
So this week with the PLL re-cap, I, Josh Hinke, will be your captain. Meanwhile, Captain Gilchrist is soaking up the sun in lovely Florida. When we last left Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Maya (Bianca Lawson), the two were fighting after Em caught Maya smoking a joint at a team party.
There are only two episodes remaining of this season’s favorite guilty little pleasure, Pretty Little Liars, which means just two mere hours -- minus commercials -- so that’s about 84 minutes, in which to flesh out pretty little lesbian Emily’s storyline. But if last night’s episode was an indication of things to come then Emily (Shay Mitchell) is going to end PLL’s first season with one of the best told lesbian stories on television, in my humble gay lady opinion.
While Pretty Little Liars' resident lesbian character Emily (Shay Mitchell) is not the only one who misses her free-thinking California-born girlfriend Maya (Bianca Lawson) – we miss her too – the creative team at PLL took on the weighty and prescient issue of bullying this week, wrapping it up in a pretty little package and inside the over-arching surreal mystery story that drives the show.
The guilty pleasure that just keeps giving, Pretty Little Liars, is chugging along in its winter season, offering up plenty of mystery, intrigue, saucy bitchiness, disturbing older men/teen girl storylines and one terrific lesbian coming out story. While the quartet of teen girls continues to unravel the mystery behind their collective blackmailer, Emily (Shay Mitchell) is getting a thoughtful, carefully plotted coming out story, and a mighty cute girlfriend named Maya (Bianca Lawson).
That terrifically guilty pleasure of last summer, Pretty Little Liars, is back to become the must-see winter addiction! While much of the episode occurs in Hanna’s (Ashley Benson) hospital room après the summer season’s cliffhanging episode in which ‘A’ clipped her with a car, PLL’s resident lesbian character Emily (Shay Mitchell) gets a great storyline in this mid-season premiere. Hence, our SheWired ‘Gay-Caps,’ in which we primarily sum up storylines for LGBT characters on shows that offer multiple storylines.
Emily Fields will get some gay company when glamorous bad boy Adam Lambert guest stars on ABC’s Pretty Little Liars for the Halloween episode in October, according to E! online. The American Idol contestant will play himself on the show, performing at a pumpkin-themed party that the Liars are attending.
Now that Pretty Little Liars’ Emily’s first love Maya has been housed away at juvie rehab / ex-gay camp -- for at least three episodes -- for holding what is likely the leftovers from her California medical marijuana license stash, there’s not too much to ‘Gay-Cap’ on the guilty little pleasure of a show. Especially since Em’s none too embracing mama Pam, played by the lovely Nia Peeples, has not been in the picture either…However, there appears to be some lesbian tension on the horizon between Em (Shay Mitchell) and her swim team bully Paige (Lindsey Shaw). Last week’s episode had hyper-competitive Paige fondling Emily’s bra in the locker room – not while Em was wearing it—making homophobic comments and holding Em under the water during after-hours swim in a ‘me thinks the jock doth protest too much’ sort of way.

It’s not every day a teenaged girl gets to meet one of her idols, but in the not-so sleepy town of Rosewood just about anything is possible. This week on the episode entitled “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” Pretty Little Liars lady-killer and queen of the school pool Emily (Shay Mitchell) has a brush with fame with five-time Olympic medal winner Missy Franklin.
While Pretty Little Liars is the preferred guilty pleasure of teens and adults alike who just froth over soapy drama with a mysterious edge and a remarkably well-written lesbian storyline, Rosewood’s resident lesbian Emily Fields has recently endured a string of mishaps ala her blackmailer "A" that have seriously stunted her love life. The episode kicks off with Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Em (Shay Mitchell) dressed as the cutest candy stripers ever while keeping watch as Spencer (Troian Bellisario) acts as the show’s ostensible Nancy Drew digging for the missing page from their bitchy dead friend Alison’s file in the morgue.
For those of you keeping up you may recall that resident lesbian Emily’s (Shay Mitchell) love-life appeared to have petered out with her romance with bully-turned-lovable-whacko Paige becoming a big flop along with Paige’s attempts to come to grips with being gay. But toward the end of last season Emily did make a connection with Samara (Claire Holt), a cute, proudly out jewelry maker who’s deeply involved with the GSA at nearby Sheridan Prep.
Monday hailed a big kiss goodbye to those adorable Pretty Little Liars for the first season, and while a few lingering questions were tied up in the finale, there are still so many left unanswered. For instance, where the hell was Emily's gay storyline? There were a few passing lines about Em's gayness and one big piece of crappy news for Em fans, courtesy of Mama Pam. But where were Emily's loves for the finale - Paige, Maya, Samara?
Pretty Little Liars teased fans of the lesbian storyline two weeks ago with Emily's (Shay Mitchell) former schoolyard bully Paige (Lindsey Shaw) surprising her with a big snog in Em's car before begging her not to tell. And then last week nothing. But alas, the PLL writing team stepped up Emily's storyline last night and made it charmingly cute, if not really gay, what with the addition of a couple of P!nk songs, a picnic in the woods and a kiss.
It seemed for a couple of weeks that Pretty Little Liars’ resident gay girl Emily’s character had been benched, what with her first love Maya having been hauled off to juvie rehab / ex-gay camp several episodes ago. But this week presented a gay storyline refresh that made Em the object of scorn from a hateful parent, the recipient of much love from her homophobic leaning mom and the apple of at least one girl’s eye. Not that someone with remotely tuned Gaydar couldn’t have seen it coming, but still, it’s nice to see the lesbian storyline getting some love. The last time we saw Emily (Shay Mitchell) she was swimming her heart out in the pool to the point that her former team mate / gay-baiting bully Paige (Lindsey Shaw) had all but conceded defeat, especially after she turned up on Emily’s doorstep in the rain apologizing for being such a narrow minded jack-ass.
There is one week remaining of that guilty little pleasure Pretty Little Liars, and things are really starting to amp up for the show’s resident lesbian Emily and her best pals Hanna, Spencer and Aria. While Paige (Lindsey Shaw) waffles about coming out Emily (Shay Mitchell) becomes smitten with a deceptively lovely but likely dangerous blond named Samara (Claire Holt)
It feels like a lifetime ago since Pretty Little Liars gave screen time to Rosewood’s lesbian lady killer Emily’s love life, although, in PLL time it’s really only been about a week. But never fear because, this week, Emily (Shay Mitchell) got all kinds of lucky (take that as you will). The last time PLL’s producers paid attention to Em’s love life she and Maya (Bianca Lawson) were on a date and Maya had revealed that she had a fling while locked away at juvie rehab boot camp. The big reveal there was that the affair was with a dude.
It’s been a couple of weeks since we’ve had a Pretty Little Liars recap since pretty little lesbian Emily’s (Shay Mitchell) storyline was pretty much on ice for last week’s show. This week however, that cute, although not wholly trustworthy, Samara (Claire Holt) wormed her way into Emily’s mom Pam’s (Nia Peeples) heart with a line of BS longer than the length of Rosewood, PA.
