Author Sara Marcus on the Riot Grrrl Revolution

Sara Marcus -- pictured above--author of the new book Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution, says the punk ladies of the ’90s changed not only music and style but also sexual boundaries. 'Although none of Riot Grrrl’s original progenitors identified as lesbians, the movement had taken much of its inspiration from the gay punk networks of the late ’80s and early ’90s. And by 1996, when all the bands originally associated with Riot Grrrl had broken up or were headed that way, the torch was passed to a new wave of specifically queer musicians: all-lesbian supergroup Team Dresch (who frequently toured with Bikini Kill in their early years), power-poppers the Butchies, avant-metal duos the Haggard and the Need.'

A Black History Moment: Valaida Snow, Trumpeter, Singer, Dancer and Concentration Camp Survivor

While there was no systematic program for elimination of people of African descent in Nazi Germany as there was for Jews, the fate of black people from 1933 to 1945 in Nazi Germany and in German-occupied territories ranged from isolation, persecution, sterilization, medical experimentation,  incarceration, brutality and murder. On a return trip to  Europe after headlining at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, Valaida Snow was captured in Nazi- occupied  Copenhagen and interned in a concentration camp. It is rumored that Snow was sent to a concentration camp no only because she was black but also because of her friendships with German women musicians -- implying lesbianism.

In fact, more and more reality shows are featuring LGBT contestants or cast mates including Jake Nodar, the gay horse trainer on Full Metal Jousting; Robear Chinosi the gay tattoo artist on NY Ink; and Dani Shay and Tyler Ford, the lesbian and transgender (respectively) musicians on The Glee Project. Here are a few reality shows with LGBT characters you won’t want to miss.
