Why are we scared of female athletes who question the narrow views of what it means to be female?

Basketball star Brittney Griner is one to watch for many reasons. She came out and revealed she was gay before she had her first professional game aft for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury. She is one of the rare athletes to come out as an active player. It was a moment that showed how far America has progressed-but also how far it still has to go. Google her and "Brittney Griner man" shows up as often as her dunks when she played for Baylor University. More disturbing than the comments about her being a man are the attempts to make Griner feel ashamed for preferring pants over dresses. However, with Griner set to debut on the national stage this summer, can butch female athletes be free to express themselves?

The Global LGBT Summit is underway in Philadelphia. On Thursday April 29^th a National Sports Panel discussed the toxic effect of homophobia in college and professional sports. One of the panelists was Dr. Pat Griffin.

WNBA legend and owner of the Sparks, Lisa Leslie called out a TMZ employee for claiming that the majority of women in the women’s basketball league are lesbians.

Is it news or not news that U.S. soccer coach Pia Sundhage is a lesbian? Scandinavians say she came out in her local Swedish newspaper a long time ago, and the soccer community just shrugs their shoulders, but apparently the United States wasn’t listening the first time so she came out again on Lasse Bentsson’s show. She did it with more fanfare this time, opening with singing a song and playing the guitar. I kid you not...

Megan Rapinoe says she's been playing better since she came out. So much so, that she helped the U.S. Women's soccer team win a gold medal Thursday in the final game against Japan. While efforts have been made to ensure that gay athletes competing at the Olympic games in London this summer feel welcome and safe, the 2014 winter games in Sochi, Russia may prove difficult to provide the same conditions.

Two days after winning a spot on the women's U.S. Olympic wrestling team, Stephany Lee married her partner Brigg McDonald in a small ceremony in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Monday. Lee, 27, beat Iris Smith, who wrestles for the U.S. Army, and 2008 Olympian Ali Bernard on Saturday earning her a spot on the team.

US midfielder Megan Rapinoe confirmed the existence of gay athletes, saying “we’re out there,” during a recent interview with KickTV.
