'Killing of Sister George' Star Susannah York Dies at Age 72

Academy Award-nominated actress Susannah York, star of the controversial 1968 lesbian triangle drama, The Killing of Sister George, has died from cancer at age 72.  Two years last York took part in the film adaptation of the play The Killing of Sister George with Coral Browne and Beryl Reid. The lesbian sex scene between Browne's and York's characters was deemed so explicit that the film received an X rating at the time in the United States and was banned or censored in several countries.

Barbra Streisand to Direct 'Gypsy' and Star as Mama Rose?

Entertainment legend Barbra Streisand is in negotiations to direct and star in a new film adaptation of the classic stage musical Gypsy. Streisand would play Mama Rose, considered one of the most challenging roles in theater. Reidel reports Arthur Laurents, librettist for Gypsy, has given his approval to Streisand, whom he directed in her first Broadway musical in 1961, I Can Get It For You Wholesale, and for whom he wrote the beloved 1973 film romance The Way We Were.

For the showtune lovers among us... Barbra Streisand confirms that she will play Mama Rose, the ultimate stage mother, in a new film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical Gypsy. With difficult songs such as "Rose's Turn" and "Everything's Coming Up Roses," the role of Mama Rose is one of the most challenging in musical theater. It has previously been played on Broadway by Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Linda Lavin, Bernadette Peters, and Patti LuPone. In previous film versions Rose has been portrayed by Rosalind Russell and Bette Midler.

Actress and AIDS Activist Elizabeth Taylor Dies at Age 79

Legendary actress, AIDS activist and LGBT icon Elizabeth Taylor died Wednesday morning in Los Angeles. She was 79. The Academy Award winner for Butterfield 8, Taylor famously starred in National Velvet when she was an adolescent and later went on to become a darling of Tennessee Wiliams' classics that were made into movies, including in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Paul Newman and Suddenly Last Summer with Montgomery Clift and Katherine Hepburn. Hollywood legend has it that Taylor was the first Hollywood star, male or female, to $1 million for Cleopatra. She also famously sparred with one of the great loves of her life, Richard Burton, in the film adaptation of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
