African Americans have worked hard to get the vote and to get a man of African descent in the White House. In 2008 we came out in unprecedented numbers with Obama taking 95% of the black vote, thanks to the help of his biggest support base - African American ministers and their parishioners.

On Dec. 20 thousands of gay marriage supporters took to the streets to peacefully demonstrate against Prop. 8, the hateful legislation that ended gay marriage in California. Just the day before, Prop. 8's supporters filed to nullify the thousands of same-sex marriages that occurred between June and the November election.

Oklahoma state representative Sally Kern and her challenger Brittany Novotny don't agree on much, but neither supports one of the more contentious issues in their state this Election Day: State Question 744. The mailer also points out that Novotny is unmarried, chair of the LGBT Caucus of Oklahoma, and supports marriage equality as defining traits. Kern, on the other hand "supports traditional marriage (between a man and women [sic])" and touts that she is the wife of a preacher.

A year ago, I would have told you that my brother Michael was one of the main reasons I wanted President Obama to stay in office. When he told my family he was gay, we told him we loved him and that we would support him — in this election that means supporting the candidate who shares our values on gay rights. President Obama's public announcement of support for marriage equality and the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" were joyful days for my family, and gave us hope for more progress toward equality under President Obama and Vice President Biden.

Nearly 100 members of the U.S. Congress have now taken a stand for equality by participating in the No H8 campaign by photographer Adam Bouska. No H8's third installment of "No H8 on the Hill," which released photos of 67 members of Congress today, includes several out gay and bisexual congresspeople, the campaign's first senators, and the first Republican to call for LGBT equality.

Pastor David H. Grisham has called on his ministry to boycott the city of Houston by imposing economic sanctions on the city for electing lesbian mayor Annise Parker and for allowing Planned Parenthood to build a clinic in the city, saying "Both of these actions are an abomination in the eyes of God."

The official outcome of the race may not be declared for weeks, however, as Kamala Harris is 9,000 votes ahead as of Thursday morning, but provisional and absentee ballots are still being counted. Annise Parker, the openly lesbian winner of Houston's mayoral election last month, was sworn into office this weekend. Parker has officially become the nation's most prominent LGBT mayor in the nation's fourth-largest city. Holding the Bible for Parker as she was sworn in-was her longtime partner, Kathy Hubbard. 

Washington United for Marriage today announced victory in its fight to uphold marriage equality in Washington state, with 52% of Washington voters approving Referendum 74, and just 48% opposed. With this vote, Washington becomes the ninth state — along with the District of Columbia — to legalize same-sex marriage, and among the first to do so at the ballot box. In a landslide victory for equality on November 6, voters in Maine and Maryland also voted to legalize marriage equality, and Minnesota voters rejected a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would have banned same-sex marriage.
