The Republican-run filibuster won today in the Senate as they halted the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” with a 56-43 vote. The defense bill needed a total of 60 votes to pass in the Senate today. John McCain’s victory is our disgust and fuel to keep moving forward and striving for equality in all parts of our lives – whether it be at home, work or in the military serving openly.
With the global-wide kerfuffle about an Islamophobic minister, Rev. Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida, threatening to burn the Koran on the ninth anniversary of 9/11, little attention last week was given to a federal district court judge’s ruling that the military’s "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" (DADT) ban on gays and lesbians serving openly is unconstitutional.
Soon after Obama’s inauguration in 2009, the LGBTQ community waited anxiously to hear that steps were being made to repeal DADT. But on June 8 of that year when the Supreme Court refused to review the Pentagon policy that prohibits LGBTQ servicemembers to serve openly in the military, Obama’s people added salt to the wounds of our LGBTQ servicemembers by stating in court papers that the ruling on DADT was correct because of the military’s legitimate concern of LGBTQ servicemembers endangering “unit cohesion”— a concept totally debunked by a 2002 study.
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (more commonly referred to as the meat-wearing, bra-firing, bandage-wrapped musician Lady Gaga) is poised to lead a protest rally in Maine today to bring attention to the military’s contentious “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. The controversial singer/songwriter will be accompanied by gay and straight military veterans. Support for her very public fight to end harassment and discrimination in the military is being supported by Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN).
Lady Gaga sported a black suit with white shirt and tie when she approached the podium yesterday at the rally to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in Portland, ME. She proudly boasted, “I’d like to propose a new law. Our new law is called, ‘If you don’t like it, go home.” A dedicated “little monster” (Gaga’s endearing term for her fans) posted the following in-depth two-part video series on YouTube. The videos haven’t been spliced for headline news or sensationalized media – it’s the bare bones. The prime rib of meat, if you will.
The fan-favorite housewife has an update as to where the women stand.
The Navy's top officer, Adm. Gary Roughead, said he will soon deliver his recommendations to Defense secretary Robert Gates on the repeal effort for "don't ask, don't tell" after going over a Pentagon study of the matter.
"There were so many brutal things going on in the world when the record came out, especially in America, and yet it made me feel as if all would be OK," said the 74-year-old icon.

Thomas Beatie became known as the world's first pregnant man and now he is pregnant with baby number three. Some argue that because he is a trans man, it's not the same. We are just like other American men -- nerds, cowboys, suits, metrosexuals, jocks, chauvinist pigs, etc. Maybe by admitting that, by being forced to see ourselves reflected in Beatie’s mirror, we’ll find a way to accept ourselves as we are, with all our flaws, even as we struggle to show the world our true diversity. Trans man Jacob Anderson-Minshall breaks down the Beatie debate.
