To herald that transitional time of year that is the end of summer and the beginning of the school year, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite school-themed TV shows, many of which feature lesbians, or at least strong female characters – whether they are the outcasts or the popular and/or mean girls. Update your Netflix queue to include a few of these queer-friendly favorite series that compliment the back to school spirit just right.

From broadcast (90210, The Good Wife) to cable (Nurse Jackie, True Blood), GLAAD's 15th annual "Where We Are on TV" study leaves no stone unturned. Meet all of the LGBT characters on television this year including Archie Panjabi's Kalinda, Polly Walker's Clarice Willow, HawthoRNe's Kelly Epson, True Blood's Pam, Hellcats' The Wedge and of course Grey's Anatomy's Callie and Arizona.

Denise and Donna of The Lesbian Lounge announced their Golden Kitty Awards for the New Year and SheWired is a lucky recipient along with Autostraddle.com. Other Golden Kitty recipients include Cathy DeBuono and Jill Bennett for We Have to Stop Now, Shannon Wentworth and Sweet Travel and Cherry Bomb.
