Over 90 percent of parents surveyed support their child's gender identity, but half of the kids are getting bullied at school, according to the report, released along with a new guide for these parents.

Billy Lucas, a 15-year-old high school freshman from Greensburg, Ind., took his own life Thursday following a period of antigay bullying from classmates that went unaddressed. "Some people at school called him names," student Nick Hughes told WHTR, adding that most of the names questioned Lucas's sexual orientation. The young man was unable to fight back.

Another Student Sues Minn. School District Over Antigay Bullying

Texas Plans to Amp Up Rules Around Bullying

Texas lawmakers intend to hammer out an authoritative definition of bullying early next year. At least seven bills relating to bullying in schools and online have already been filed for consideration in the legislature next session, which opens on January 11. Two of those bills would require schools to report annually on its incidents of bullying, making note of which were based on race, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation.

Kenneth Weishuhn, a high school freshman in Paullina, Iowa, took his own life Saturday after being bullied by classmates at school and online, and with death threats by phone. KTIV reports on the death of Weishuhn, who was 14 and attended South O’Brien High School in O’Brien County. His sister Kayla said that friends at the school “turned on him” after he told them he was gay last month, and boys in her sophomore class started the bullying.

The parents of a high school freshman in Amherst, N.Y., who killed himself told CNN that their son had endured pervasive antigay bullying beginning in fifth grade, both at school and particularly online. Jamey Rodemeyer, 14, committed suicide Monday in the Buffalo, N.Y., suburb. “He had the biggest heart in that little body,” Rodemeyer’s mother, Tracey, told CNN's Anderson Cooper Wednesday. “He was either loved so sincerely or he was bullied. There wasn’t much in between.” Much of the bullying Jamey faced, Tracey Rodemeyer said, occurred not in school but via Facebook and other social media sites. "Because people can access each other in numbers so readily — it’s still accessible for people to do their bullying.”
