Sen. John McCain Lambasts DADT Repeal Study Results

In a Sunday appearance on NBC's Meet the Press, Arizona senator John McCain cast doubt on the validity of the Pentagon’s "don't ask, don't tell" repeal study and said that any end to the policy will require further congressional hearings. Gregory pressed McCain on details of the Pentagon Working Group study leaked last week to the Washington Post, which found that more than 70% of service members who responded to a survey believe DADT repeal will have a positive, mixed or negligible effect on the armed forces.

The White House on Tuesday issued the following statement from President Barack Obama on the end of "don't ask, don't tell." Official repeal of the 1993 policy went into effect at 12:01 a.m. this morning. "Today, the discriminatory law known as ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ is finally and formally repealed. As of today, patriotic Americans in uniform will no longer have to lie about who they are in order to serve the country they love. As of today, our armed forces will no longer lose the extraordinary skills and combat experience of so many gay and lesbian service members. And today, as Commander in Chief, I want those who were discharged under this law to know that your country deeply values your service.

New data from the Palm Center shows that the military continued to discharge openly gay mission-critical troops under the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy in 2009, while a disproportionately high number of women and minorities were discharged under the policy.
