Rihanna returned to the stage for her Savage x Fenty fashion show earlier this month at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and the result was unlike any runway we've ever seen before.
The superstar, whose music career is currently on an unofficial hiatus, put together the New York Fashion Week show for her lingerie brand Savage x Fenty.
In a new documentary from Amazon Prime, we see behind-the-scenes footage that shows us how the show came to be and how Rihanna herself stressed inclusivity and diversity. "I'm looking for unique characteristics in people that aren't usually highlighted in the world of fashion as it pertains to lingerie and sexy—what society sees sexy," the "We Found Love" singer says at the beginning of the 50-minute doc.
And she followed through with that promise. Along with models like Gigi and Bella Hadid, the show features bodies of all different shapes and sizes, ethnicities, gender identities, as well as people living with disabilities.
Appearances from some of our favorite celebs were littered throughout the show including Cara Delavigne, "Motivation" singer Normani, Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox, and RuPaul's Drag Race winner Aquaria, along with performances from Halsey, Big Sean, Fat Joe, DJ Khalid, and more.
The wide array of representation is powerful when compared to the fashion shows we're used to. As one tweet so eloquently put it, "The Victoria’s Secret show seems to be about men looking at beautiful women. Savage x Fenty show seems to be about women feeling beautiful."
PREACH!
Victoria's Secret has certainly been feeling the heat from the LGBTQ community. Last year, the lingerie company's chief marketing officer Ed Razek resigned after saying that casting transgender models in runway shows would ruin the "fantasy."
Thank you Rihanna for redefining the fantasy so we're all included!
