Brittney Griner, Fiancée Glory Johnson Arrested After Fight

WNBA stars Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson, who are engaged to be married, were arrested Wednesday following a fight at their home in the suburbs of Phoenix, the Associated Press reports.

They were arrested on suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct after an argument “turned physical,” the AP notes. They were held for a short time in a Phoenix jail and subsequently released. There were no weapons involved and neither woman required treatment for their injuries, which were minor, a police spokeswoman told the AP.

Griner made headlines by coming out as lesbian in 2013 shortly, after she became the Phoenix Mercury’s number 1 draft pick that year. She had been a college star for Baylor University.

The Mercury won the WNBA championship last year, helped along by Griner’s record 129 blocks. She was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. She was also on the U.S. team that won a gold medal in the most recent FIBA World Championship competition. She and Johnson, who plays for the Tulsa Shock, became engaged in August and planned to marry next month.

Officials with the WNBA and both teams said they were looking into the situation and declined further comment.
