UCONN Women's Basketball Team Speaks Out for LGBTQ Inclusion in Sports

Br{ache the Silence (BTS), a newly formed advocacy group with the sole purpose of advancing LGBTQ inclusion in sports, unveiled its BTS Tour of Champions campaign this week with a video featuring the 8-time NCAA Women’s Basketball Champions UConn Huskies, according toAfterEllen.

Throughout the minute long piece, Bria Hartley, Stefanie Dolson, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Brianna Banks stress that bullying and anti-gay comments have no place on the court.  And at the end of the announcement, the four stars of the 2013 championship squad invite BTS supporters to “be your own champion.”

The women, representing the only NCAA team to bring home the banner 5 times in the last 10 years, has cemented themselves as the first women’s collegiate program to break the silence and publicly declare “all are welcome here.” 

According to the BTS tour website, which launched on Oct. 28^th, the organization strives to create visible LGBTQ and straight ally role models in the women’s sports community in order to combat homophobia and mobilize a charge for respect for all. 

There is no word yet on which Division I, II, or III team will be featured in November.
