US midfielder Megan Rapinoe confirmed the existence of gay athletes, saying “we’re out there,” during a recent interview with KickTV, according AfterEllen.
During the six minute long discussion, Rapinoe touched on other topics including her team’s quest for Olympic gold in London this summer, the US rivalry with the Japanese national team, her energetic goal celebrations, and her cartoon and recent ads for NIKE.
But what is making the rounds online is Rapinoe’s answer to the interviewer’s question pertaining to her vocal support of the gay and lesbian community and absence of out athletes in sports. The discussion begins at the 5:20 mark and Rapinoe says that “obviously we’re out there” and that on the female side, “it’s accepted within the teams and within the sport, but it seems like sports is that last institution to address homophobia.”
Rapinoe is a native of California, has played in the women’s professional circuit for the Seattle Sounders, and her resume includes 47 international caps and 12 goals.
