As of Sunday, it has been three months since a teen lesbian couple was shot in a park in Portland, Texas, near Corpus Christie.
For the first time since, Mary Kristene Chapa, 18, (pictured left) posted on her Facebook about the incident, according to KZTV10.com: “Today marks 3 months since my accident. I've learned life is so fragile and cherish the people you have in your life, love them don't take things for granted and buy pepper spray! they deserve it!”
Another post reads: “I love that people pray for me. I really think that's why I'm recovering so fast.”
Chapa and her girlfriend Mollie Olgin, 19, were found in knee-deep grass in Violet Andrews Park on June 23. Olgin died from her wounds, but Chapa survived.
An unidentified witness described the shooting suspect as a white man in his 20s who is 5 feet, 8 inches, 140 pounds and has dark hair, according to a police statement released June 28.
A revised sketch of the suspect was released in mid-July with Chapa’s help when her communication skills improved.
Police still have not arrested a suspect in the case, for which there is no evidence that the shootings were motivated by the victims’ relationship, authorities said.
Friends and family of the two women organized a candlelight vigil at the park on June 29. Supporters also held vigils across the country, including in San Francisco at Harvey Milk Plaza, Washington, D.C., in DuPont Circle and at the Matthew Shepard Memorial Triangle in West Hollywood, Calif.
