7 of the Closest Lip Syncs in Drag Race Herstory
These ones kept you on the edge of your seat the entire time.
The "Lip Sync For Your Life" segment is one of the absolute best parts of RuPaul's Drag Race. The suspense. The music. The moves. It's all so exciting and is one of the many elements that separates RuPaul's Drag Race from other reality show competition. Aside from All Stars 2, RPDR doesn't rely on biased votes or tricks to do eliminations. Each queen is fairly given a chance to fight for her life, which makes their painful elimination a little bit easier to handle for the fans.
In the eight seasons of RPDR and two seasons of All Stars, we've been treated to a wide variety of lip syncs. Some were good (see: the 7 best lip syncs), some bad (see: the 7 worst lip syncs), and some were...just sort of there. But every once and a while there's a lip sync that's really hard to call. There are just some lip syncs that leave you thinking that either queen could've won. Below are 7 of those lip syncs—possibly the 7 closest lip syncs in RPDR herstory.
(Sidenote: there won't be any non-elimination lip syncs nor will there be any final episode lip syncs on this list, as no one technically wins those (except Tyra Sanchez, who definitely won her lip sync). Also, Kennedy Davenport vs. Katya will not be on this list, because even Katya admitted that Kennedy destroyed her.)
1. Phi Phi O'Hara vs. Alaska (All Stars 2)
Phi Phi really served the soul of the song, and some smooth moves, while Alaska brought Lil' Poundcake to life. Arguably, Alaska's look played a big role in her lip sync performance, so it's worth wondering whether or not she'd actually have done well in the lip sync with a different outfit.
2. Adore Delano vs. Trinity K. Bonet (Season 6)
Trinity K. Bonet was a lip sync assassin in her season and Adore gave it her all, and then some. What we ended up with was a powerful performance that both queens should be very proud of.
3. Morgan McMichaels vs. Sonique (Season 2)
One of the first lip syncs that really pushed the limits. Morgan's lip sync was completely on point, and Sonique worked every inch of the stage. They both served it and both would have deserved the win.
4. Alyssa Edwards vs. Coco Montrese (Season 5)
This list would not be legitimate if Alyssa vs. Coco was not on the list. What can you say about this lip sync that hasn't already been said? These are two excellent, practiced queens who are amazing at what they do. Never has a lip sync been so close.
5. Alyssa Edwards vs. Detox (All Stars 2)
This was probably the second most exciting lip sync of All Stars 2, second only to the Tatianna vs. Alyssa Edwards lip sync. The song was perfect. Detox's look and body motions were entrancing. Alyssa slayed the stage. Alyssa may have edged out the competition, but Detox was really close on this one.
6. Darienne Lake vs. Ben Dela Creme (Season 6)
This lip sync may not have had the best moves, but it was emotional (to say the least). Both queens were fighting for their spot in the finals, and neither wanted to go home. It's hard to say who won, and based off the lip sync alone, it's reasonable to suggest that either queen could've taken it.
7. Stacy Layne Matthews vs. India Ferrah (Season 3)
We didn't get to see too much of this lip sync, but RuPaul was uncharacteristically impressed with this one specifically. It's hard to say what we as viewers missed, but even in the clips we did see, it was a competitive lip sync. Stacy Layne Matthews served all the attitude and moves she needed to stay in the competition, but India didn't go down without a fight.
Given these two Alyssa Edwards lip syncs—as well as the two non-elimination lip syncs against Roxxxy Andrews (season 5) and Tatianna (All Stars 2)—it's probably best to just not lip sync against her, because she will give you a run for your money.
