8 Fail-Proof Icebreakers for Queer First Dates

First dates are fun, right? Except for the times when they’re terrifying, awkward and OMG, can I just go home or hide under the table until it’s over or something?

But don’t give up! She/he is just as nervous as you are, so arm yourself with these queer icebreakers to turn that first date into a second. Third. And forever.

1. How did you come out?

Hey mom and dad I'm gay.

Just personal enough to create intimacy without being too forward. It opens the possibility for funny stories and helps you understand that very important time in your date's life.

2. Have you ever been to Pride?

People celebrating at a gay Pride event.

How many Pride parades has he/she been to? When was the last parade, and which did they enjoy most? Then, tell that hilarious story about when you got on stage and danced with drag queens until security intervened.

3. Who's your favorite queer celeb?

Lady Gaga singing Born this Way.

Start a convo about who's your favorite/the most influential LGBT celeb. And, if they say anyone but Gaga, walk away.

4. Play gay "F*CK, Marry, Kill"

Fuck marry kill game.

This is a really fun game if the conversation is failing and a great way to get to know your date's romantic tastes. Name three gay celebs/fictional characters and have them choose which one they’d f*ck, which one they’d marry and which one they’d kill. Example: gay male singers (George Michael/Elton John/Sam Smith) or The L Word women — hours of fun.

5. Do you have gay family members?

A GIF from Modern Family.

Opens the door for the ever-so-fun “is there a gay gene” debate. Finding out who inspires/influenced your date growing up is always a win.

6. Who triggers your gaydar?

A GIF of Rebel Wilson.

We all have it. That little inkling when we just know a celeb or mutual friend is gay but haven’t come out/come to terms with it yet. Compare opinions.

7. Do you fit any gay stereotypes?

Everybody's a little gay.

There are so many stereotypes that gay men and women put up with, but between you and me, some of them are so spot on. We’ve all been subject to stereotypes and it’s something all of us have a story to tell or something to say on the subject. So, have a giggle about your five cats and the fact that you don't own a single dress.

8. Tell me about you ...

I'm listening.

What's the most important thing about first dates? Actively listening. Don’t just sit there in silence nodding. Actually, listen to what your date is saying and then ask more leading questions to keep them chatting. Then ask that final, most terrifying question — when's your next date?
